How to Fix a Humming Garbage Disposal

If you have a garbage disposal that is humming than you have a garbage disposal that is either jammed or that has some faulty working parts. Your garbage disposal should not hum. You should only hear grinding noise coming from your disposal when you flip the switch.

In many cases the fix is a simple one. In some cases you may not be able to do the repairs on your own. It is always worth trying to repair it yourself before you call in a professional to save some money.

First Things First

When you are getting ready to work on your garbage disposal the very first thing you need to do is to cut off the electric supply to the disposal. Flipping the switch to the off position is not enough. Cut the main power supply to the garbage disposal.

There is always a serious shock hazard involved when you are working on an appliance that has both water and electricity go to it.

Check the Reset

In some disposals there is a reset button on the bottom of the disposal that will reset the system. This safety feature is in place to prevent the disposal motor from burning out when it becomes overloaded from working too hard.

Take a look at the bottom of the disposal to see if your model has a reset button on it. Keep it in mind when you finish working on the disposal it will have to be depressed to make the disposal functional again.

As a matter of fact before you cut the power to your disposal and before you get your tools out you may want to wait about 20 minutes than depress the disposal. It may have just overheated.

Next Thing

Once you have your electric supply cut to the garbage disposal than you can work at getting the clog out of your disposal and take a look to see if anything is out of whack with the blades. On most models you can remove the top half of the disposal and take a look inside. Sometimes all it is a bone or something like a peach pit stuck in the disposal.

If you can easily dislodge the item than just pull it out, put the top back on the disposal and your done. If you have followed the advice above and things are not panning out as planned than please call in a professional.
