How To Fix Sliding Closet Doors
Here's what you're going to need to do.
Why Did the Closet Door Break?
There are a number of ways a door can actually slide, although a spring-based bar system or rollers that are affixed to the door are the two most common methods of creating a sliding door. The most common reason why the door breaks is because the slider has come out of the rail, either at the top of the door, at the bottom, or even in both places.
For rolling doors, you'll simply need to pull the door toward you based on the location of the rail to slide the rollers back into place. Be careful if you're doing this when only one roller has dislodged because you can put stress at the point of the door where the other slider is present and rip out the screws or even bend the rail.
For spring-based systems, you will need to compress the spring to then slide the door into place. There will be a location along the edge of the rail that will allow you to push the bar that keeps the door in place through.
Did Your Bottom Rail Guide Break?
Many sliding doors have a bottom rail or a guide installed to keep the doors in place. When this breaks, the closet doors will swing outward or inward and cause the rails to bend with them. A simple rail guide can be screwed into the floor and the cost of the part is often less than $5.
If your rail has bent, then you might be able to use a rubber mallet to return them back to their original position. Loose rails can also cause the sliding closet door to malfunction, which means just affixing them tightly once again. If you cannot get the old rails tight once again or returned to their normal shape, then you may need to replace the entire rail.
Did the Sliding Mechanism Break?
If the sliding mechanism broke, then you'll need to replace it with a new one before the closet door will work. Try to get the same part that broke so your installation chores are not difficult. It's actually easier to replace and entire system of rollers than install a different item if you cannot find the same mechanism that broke. You will likely need to install a screw anchor into the door where the old screws were to secure the new sliders.
With a little effort and a small investment, you can hang your sliding closet doors quickly. Use this guide to help accomplish that task and you'll be able to have that door fixed in no time at all.
