Garage Door Hurricane Brace Reinforcement Protection Tips

Protecting Your Garage From a Hurricane

Can your garage stand up against a hurricane? Here are some facts and ways to protect your garage from a hurricane.

Garage Doors

The first thing to think about is how old your garage door is. A pre-1993 garage door can sustain up to 50mpg winds. However a post-1993 garage door can make it up to 100mph winds. The base hurricane wind speed is 74mph. For those unusual category 5 hurricanes, wind speeds can make it up to 157mph+.

Protect Yourself

To protect yourself from a pending storm, install impact-resistant doors. Brands such as Amarr and Clopay manufacture doors that are rated to withstand 165mph winds. Strong fabric covered netting can be installed as a pending storm approaches. Braces can also be used at any point in time and installed when needed. For a double car garage, three braces need to be installed.

After the Storm

In case your door does not weather the storm, consider upgrading to the impact resistant model. Replace springs and openers if the door structure is still good. Get written estimates and make sure the garage door repair company is licensed and insured.
