How to Prepare for a Paint Job

4 Steps to Preparing for an Exterior Paint Job

Here is an outline of 4 easy steps to follow when preparing for the perfect exterior paint job.

1. Power Wash

Replace rotted or splintered wood as needed and repair window and door frames. Replace and damaged weather stripping before using the power washer. Use a stiff brush and mild detergent as needed.

2. Fill and Sand

Use resin filler for large holes and a spackle for shallow holes. Use caulking for cracks and overfill and then sand flat. Sand scrapped areas smooth.

3. Apply Primer

Oil or latex primers can be applied first. Oil is best for metal, chalked surfaces, and new wood. Avoid priming in direct sunlight to prevent blistering and shallow penetration.

4. Paint

Paints to use should be suitable for substrate. A proper method of application should be used for exterior projects. If assistance is needed, let professionals intervene to complete the project.
