How To Resurface Kitchen Cabinets

If your kitchen looks outdated, you might be tempted to purchase a new set of kitchen cabinets.

Instead of going through with that cost, consider resurfacing your cabinets instead. Over the course of one weekend, you can create a brand new look and get the job done for less than $200 per cabinet in many instances. Here's what you'll want to do.


Step #1: Clean Up Your Exposed Sides

Remove your cabinet doors.

Then clean the sides and faces of each cabinet with a grease remover.

Once the cleaner has dried, scuff the cabinets with a 150-grit sandpaper and then wipe it down once again.

Using carpenter's glue, affix plywood panels to the exposed ends of your cabinet banks and secure with finishing nails. Fill any holes with wood filler.

Step #2: Cover Your Stiles

Your styles are the vertical-frame members of the cabinet. The rails are the horizontal members.

Measure twice, then cut once the peel-and-stick veneer you've chosen for your new look.

Press the veneer into place, peeling away the backing as you move from top to bottom.

Use a wood block to firmly press down on the veneer to remove air bubbles.

Trim any excess veneer away from the cabinet opening.

Step #3: Cover Your Rails

Repeat everything you did with your stiles now with your rails. Try to square up where the rails and stiles intersect so the veneer doesn't overlap. If you have trimmings which need to be removed, a small razor blade can get the job done in a hurry.

Step #4: Hang Your Doors

Now you're ready to install the doors into place once again.

Make sure they are properly aligned. Stubborn hinges can fit back into place with the light tap of a rubber mallet.

Apply any veneer to the front of the door once it has been hung. Then attach the new knobs and pulls and your finish drawers. If you need to drill new holes, use a small piece of plywood with pre-drilled holes for left and right cabinets to keep your placement consistent.
