Short term renting has become very popular with the advent of the internet. It is now very easy for people to rent their homes to anyone, anywhere in world for a night, a week or a month. The homeowner gets a bit of extra cash and the renter gets to stay in a house, instead of a hotel room.

The best way to take advantage of this trend is to first understand who the people are that rent homes short term.

The vast majority of short-term renters travel at least twice a year. They are very experienced voyagers, with almost a third of them having been to over 20 countries. ¾ of them speak more than one language, making multilingual rental sites a huge asset.

They don't like to eat at national chains and burger joints. They want to eat local delicacies and take in the local environment. They want to shop at local stores and avoid the malls. They want to be “at home,” live like locals and get away from the tourist path. Since most of them travel with family, having more space is a huge part of the reasons that they give for choosing short term rentals.

Safety is a major concern. After all, if you're safe in your home, they know that they can feel safe as well.

Short term renters have a tendency to do it a lot. Over 65% of short term renters have done it more than twice.

Income has nothing to do with who chooses to take advantage of short term rentals.

Gender plays a small role, with the majority of short-term renters being women. This number might also be influenced by the fact that the women of the house tend to make most of the travel plans.

Many short-term rental sites allow you to choose renters who have been vetted. It isn't necessary to simply list your house on Craigslist. There are sites that are specially designed to get renters and homeowners together in a way that is safe and protects both of them.

As homeowner, short-term renting is a great way to make a bit of extra money. As a renter, it's a great way to get into the community.
