Tax write off

I have recently purchased an investment property (new to the biz) and have a question about tax write offs.  I am wondering if I can write off the price of something purchased from a private seller? (ex. used appliances).  Basically if audited, would a handwritten receipt appease the IRS?

Yes. As long as what you are paying for is being used in service in your rental a hand written invoice is fine. I would only add that the price of the item needs to be market price for expected value of the used appliance.
