What are some thoughts about representing yourself at an eviction hearing?

I would think it would depend ...

I would think it would depend on the laws in your area. I know some places the laws are very confusing, very detailed and take forever to evict a tentant. If I lived in one of those places, I wouldn't want to waste half the year representing myself in it and then having to start all over again because I missed one small detail. Experience and knowledge would weigh in on this too, I'd think.
