The holidays are often a time for decorating. Lights adorn houses and streets, but can restrictions be put on these? Surprisingly enough, some home owners associations do put restrictions on various degrees of the decoration process. In one particular instance, a HOA fined a home owner for putting the decorations up too early (a week before Thanksgiving). As long as it was listed in their HOA rules, the fine is viable.
Another instance was that a code enforcer stopped by a home and told the resident that their decorations were unsafe and excessive. While they have a right to post religiously expressive decorations (under their rights to free speech), the city can enforce certain criteria as to the safety level of these decorations.
