"Fake Landlord" Scam On the Rise

A fake landlord scam is on the rise again, mostly using Craigslist to take cash deposits from unsuspecting victims. They have been meeting the would-be renters at empty houses and apartments, allowing them to take a look, and then asking for a cash deposit. By the time that the renters understand that they were caught up in a scam, it's too late and they've lost their money.

Only one arrest has been made in the latest string of these, but police think more people may be out there. Green Bay Police Department is encouraging people looking to rent in their area to let them know if they feel uncomfortable in any way with the transaction and they'll look into it for them. They've also advised to be very careful while using Craigslist right now and never to pay in cash.
