Hudson River Park Trust President Tries to Boot Rent-Stabilized Tenant

Madelyn Wils, president and CEO of Hudson River Park Trust, and her husband Steven own a loft that they have rented out to Marla Mase for the last 30 years. They alerted Ms Mase that they will require their property at the end of her lease and will not be renewing it as their son has finished his college education and needs a place to go. The simple notice that they would not be renewing her lease has turned into a legal battle because Mase believes that she is being forced out due to being a rent-stabilized tenant. She currently pays $1,000 per month while the owners say that the loft is worth at least $7,000 per month.
This is not the first time that Wils and Mase have been involved in legal battles with each other in the long-term tenancy. Mase says that the landlord filed a complaint against her once when she renovated the kitchen and also when she put walls up in the loft so that her children would have their own space. The Wils family has offered Mase $60,000 to move out, but she rejected the offer. Instead, she asked them for $750,000.
