David Colville, a landlord in Fall River, Massachusetts, has been accused of thirteen counts of child endangerment throughout his thirty-two properties. Two of these properties were condemned by the city in June of this year and shut down. Among the issues that were sited were missing or dysfunctional smoke alarms, bad and defective plumbing, exits that were blocked, and insects throughout the rooms of the units. The charge of thirteen counts of child endangerment comes from the thirteen different children that were living in the now-condemned housing.
Though it is still being decided if there is proper evidence to bring this to trial, Colville's defense lawyer states that he does not believe there will be enough evidence to hold up these charges, stating that the landlord would have had to have known about the problems and then failed to act on them. Elizabeth Souza, Fall River's lawyer, says that as the landlord, Colville had responsibilities to live up to.
