Landlord fined after renting out "death trap" home

A property in Finchley Lane, Hendon in England has been declared a death trap by environmental officers. Neighbors had complained, leading to the officers inspecting the house. They found a collapsed ceiling in the kitchen, a mattress that covered a manhole, trash littered everywhere, walls in disrepair, defective smoke detectors, and the shower was apparently being used to wash dishes. Six adults were living in the house along with four children and a nine-month-old baby.
The housing manager, Shamal Najim, was called before Willesden Magistrates Court in September, but he failed to show. The total fine he incurred was 17,000 pounds. BDB Developments Limited, the owners of the house, were also charged to the sum of 16,000 pounds after they converted the property into bedsits without applying for permission.
