When the city of Anchorage took possession of a motel that the former owner had had repossessed, they found that the tenants were without heat and the entire building infested with pests from bedbugs to mice. Terry Stahlman lost the property after failing to pay three years' worth of property taxes.
Officials have deemed the motel uninhabitable, but turning the residents out before other arrangements can be made will leave some homeless. The city is trying to avoid this, so they have allowed those that live there to stay until everything is sorted out.
One current tenant, a 27-year-old mother with small children, stated that she did not want to leave. She had lived in her car previously and would have nowhere to go, so she would prefer to stay in the one-bedroom apartment with her children and brother in which they are using space heaters just to stay warm.
