Their View: Freeport landlord registration OK, tax is not


Landlords in Freeport are fighting back against a tax that they may have to pay to do business in the city. While they understand that certain steps may need to be taken to assure safer neighborhoods, they say that the landlord registration that has already been put in place should do the job very well without adding a tax on top of that.


The tenant tax that is being discussed would be $25-$45 a year. While the city claims that this may just become part of doing business, the landlords argue that the registration makes it easier for the more responsible landlords to do business, while also helping to find the bad ones.
